What’s life coaching?

Coaching is targeted, practical, and behavior-based approach for you to create the life you want to live by creating behavioral change.

That means we:

  1. Get clear about what the real issues are
  2. Set clear outcomes about how you want life to be
  3. As your coach, I suggest practices, new habits, and resources that will help you start to live in a way that supports the changes you want to make
  4. You implement these new practices and habits in your life
  5. We talk about how it’s going, what’s getting in the way, celebrate your accomplishments and adjust goals, outcomes, and practices to keep you moving forward in your goals

Coaching is practical, targeted, as well as holistic.

Together we look at your whole life. This means we assess how you’re taking care of yourself, how your relationships are going, what’s happening at work, your creative outlets, spirituality, emotional health, and mental patterns. We take a look at everything that’s happening now and design steps to move you to your future life, primarily through behavior and actions.

Programs and Practices

So, coaching may involve adding a meditation practice, changing your bedtime, reading certain books, journaling, going out with friends more often, practicing greater vulnerability with your spouse, and starting a new art class. Or it may include a completely different set of practices and activities. However, what’s consistent is that we take the time to clarify the real issue, define the wanted outcomes, and decide on actions together to move your towards your goals.

Coaching vs. Therapy

Now, this is a little different from therapy. Therapy is often a time to share worries, work through past issues, gather support for new action, and gain perspective. I love going to therapy and consider it necessary for my on-going mental health. However, I wouldn’t necessarily ask my therapist to help me make specific and necessary changes in my life. The practical, behavior-based approach of coaching can help me get unstuck around specific issues more directly.

Living “As If”

Coaching helps you be more of who you want to be or perhaps more just yourself by beginning to live in ways that you want to live. This is what it means to live into a new reality. You behave “as if” something were already true. Practice that truth. Notice what it feels like. Learn new things from the practice with the support of a coach, and just keep on growing and evolving from there.

None of us are truly done “growing up” and, at times, we all need some support to take the next best actions. That’s what I’m here for!
